Module Traceability

Traceability

Follow serialized items, lots, handling units, custody, and supporting evidence through connected operational records.

Example buyer problem

An investigation requires item and lot history that is scattered across receipts, movements, shipments, and quality records.

Capability families

Serialized Traceability

Traceability begins with a clear identity. A product definition describes a type of item. A serialized instance identifies one specific unit. Lot and handling-unit records provide additional context for how stock was received, stored, moved, and used.

EquatorOps connects these identities to operational activity. The resulting history gives a reviewer a starting point for investigating a unit, understanding a custody change, or examining the stock associated with a quality event.

Keep identity through the movement

Use serialized item records for units that need individual tracking. Maintain lot context for the applicable stock flow, and connect it to the relevant transactions. Inventory & Logistics supplies location and handling-unit context around those records.

Nested handling units preserve relationships between pallets, totes, cases, and their contents. The LPN Nesting workflow explains how those relationships fit into inventory movement. The GSII deep dive describes the serialized item identity used for individual units.

Investigate with the operational record

An investigation may begin with a serial number, lot reference, receipt, or shipment. Follow the connected movement and custody history to understand which records are relevant. Review the associated quality events and supporting documents as part of that investigation.

Where quality holds apply, the quality state and execution controls determine what may happen to affected inventory. Regulated Operations connects those controls to receiving, inspections, disposition, and release responsibilities.

Connect the evidence behind a decision

Traceability also needs the reason for an action. Link relevant inspections, quality decisions, and document revisions to the operational context. Quality & Compliance and Document Control provide adjacent records for explaining why material was accepted, held, or released.

These connections support investigation and recall preparation. Their usefulness depends on the identifiers, transactions, and evidence captured during the actual workflow.

Start with one traceable flow

Select a product or material flow with a meaningful investigation need. Agree how the team captures serials or lots, identifies handling units, records movements, and links quality evidence. Follow a receipt through storage and an outbound activity to check that the necessary references remain available. Expand coverage as the process becomes part of daily work.

Capabilities

What this module enables.

Module-wide controls

  • Track serialized item identities separately from their product or SKU definition.
  • Carry lot context through stock records and supported operational transactions.
  • Connect handling units, locations, custody changes, and quality state.
  • Review movement history and linked evidence when investigating affected stock.

Example workflows

  • Serialized item history from receipt through shipment
  • Lot investigation with linked movements and quality records
  • Quarantine review using handling-unit and custody context

Expansion path

Start narrow, then expand with proof.

Start with one serial or lot flow, then connect its inventory movements, quality decisions, documents, and impact analysis.

Connected records

Keep the decision and its evidence together.

Follow the relationships between the change, the work, and the records that support your review.

Change review

Visible context

Connect a proposed change to the supported records and dependencies that need review.

Quality evidence

Linked records

Keep findings, actions, and supporting evidence available alongside the work.

Inventory

Operational history

Follow the material, handling, and custody records captured by the configured workflow.

Module activation
